Tomas from BRL approached me to produce a quick vignette during Beats Rhymes and Life’s Reimagine showcase. The show itself was amazing the youth killed it with their energy and the crowd was going nuts. It was inspiring to hear what folks “reimagine” their world to be. Two Protests, one evening in San Francisco

I BARTed it up to the City last night and ended up shooting two protests around the downtown area. They couldn’t have been more different. One was the Pro-Palestine folks vs. the Pro-Israel folks right across the street from each other! Everything was peaceful other than the chanting and arguing back and forth between the groups. As the night progressed, the Pro-Palestine group became at least a few hundred and started marching and blocking some downtown streets. Lively and eclectic crowd out there. The second protest I ended up shooting was a Free Jesus Ruiz Diego vigil held outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Norther California headquarters. A Lovely Day documentary is released!

Close to a half decade of shooting and editing is complete as the Lovely Day documentary made its world debut in Oakland. I was honored to be asked to take photos at the world premier. Directed by Kerri Gawryn and edited down from hundreds of hours of footage, the movie follows the story of youths finding their voice, coming together, and learning about themselves with the help of Beats Rhymes and Life. BRL is an organization based in Oakland and New York started by my friend Tomas Alvarez which helps youths use hip hop as a catalyst for social change. For more about the film check out the BRL website. And if you watch the film and happen to see some dorky looking Chinese dude taking pics, that’s me making my big screen documentary debut!

Hello Space Shuttle

Amazing barely describes today’s historic day when the space shuttle Endeavour flew just 200ft. above Moffet Field! Never have I been so close to an actual “spaceship” and I’m not sure I’ll ever see one again (crossing fingers). Wish I had time to video it too, but they only made one pass. The 30th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival is over, and for me the video work for the festival is all but finished with the release of a few new videos highlighting the Salons. You can check out the newest salon video here, with more to come soon. For now revisit the Gala Style video featuring Retrofit Republic, a sustainable clothing stylists based in San Francisco. This one also features Mr. Angry Asian Man himself, Phil Yu, Lisa Lee of Thick Dumpling Skin, Misashi Niwano from the Center for Asian American Media, and Jane Kim, San Francisco Board of Supervisor.

And now for something a little different. I produced this video with the writing talents of H.P. Mendoza, director of the San Francisco themed Colma and Fruit Fly. This year at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, he’s here to promote his latest flick, I Am A Ghost. His first horror film. We decided to pay homage to some of our own famously haunted locations in SF.
